HHDC cut a ribbon to open the new nine-story Pedro Albizu Campos Apartments at 1203 N. California. Speakers included U.S. Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, 26th Ward Chicago Alderperson Jessie Fuentes, Chicago Department of Housing (DOH) Commissioner Lissette Castañeda and Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) CEO Tracey Scott. The building is the new home to 64 families in the heart of Paseo Boricua. It has first-class views of Humboldt Park and the city skyline. Almost 80 people and the media attended the event at Division and California.
Pappageorge Haymes architects designed the building to take advantage of its prominent place on Paseo Boricua. It features 40 three-bedroom apartments, 15 two-bedrooms and 9 one-bedrooms designed specifically for families. A second-floor terrace is shared by all tenants. The $40 million project was financed with support from the IHDA, the DOH, the CHA, Merchants Capital and ComEd’s Affordable Housing New Construction program. It was constructed by Path Construction.
